About Carola Grey

Starting at the age of eleven, Carola Grey was a child prodigy playing the drums besides being a singer and creative pianist. Today she has the reputation as one of Germany's most famous modern drummers which has been officially acknowledged in 2010 when she, as the only woman, became part of the 'German Drum Heroes', a selection of the 25 best drummers in Germany. Besides being a drummer, she also received several awards as a Jazz composer.

The Concert

On January 3, 2012 she will present an evening of her music, performed by a band she has formed during her 2 month Residency in Chennai. Her band members are:

  • Vaidyanathan Suresh (ghatam, tavil, percussion)
  • Prasant Radhakrishnan (saxophone)
  • Biju Paulose (keyboard), T.B.A. (guitar), and
  • Peter Naveen Kumar (bass).

The next day she will hold a drum workshop, open for all that are interested in learning more about her drumming stile and the background of her music.

Drum Workshop with Carola Grey (4th Jan, 2012)

Special Guest: Vaidyanathan 'Ghatam'  Suresh - percussion

As an endorser for SONOR  and ZIDLJIAN and the author of several drum books, Carola has travelled the world performing solo shows and teaching. Her workshops are always entertaining and yet very informative.

She will talk about drumming basics as well as special techniques and concepts like:

  • playing in odd meters
  • soloing ideas
  • ostinatos
  • metric modulation o.a.
  • and answer questions posed by the attendees.

Together with the Indian master percussionist  V.Suresh she formed the duo KARNATIK DRUM FIRE (KDF) - an exciting mixture from Carnatic and Western drumming. 'KDF' has been travelling in India and Europe, performing on Drum Shows and Jazz festivals. They will play some pieces from their program, explain the musical and rhythmical concepts behind the compositions and talk about their way of bringing the two styles together.
