Building the future together

For the first time, more people now live in metropolitan areas than in the countryside. The resulting demand for more space leads to huge challenges in maintaining the mobility of people, goods and information, upholding the quality of life on the surface of the Earth, and protecting the environment and the availability of natural resources. The way ahead for new, highly efficient infrastructures for traffic and for supply and disposal systems must necessarily lead underground.

India is one of the fastest-growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region with very high demand for modernization. With the country’s ever-growing population, the need for improved infrastructure has also increased. Herrenknecht’s state-of-the-art tunnelling technology enables customers to realize their projects in a way that is cost-efficient, safe, quick and environmentally friendly. To meet the special requirements in the growing Indian market and of our Indian customers, Herrenknecht has established the subsidiary Herrenknecht India Private Limited in 2007. The facility is located on the outskirts of Chennai and employs around 90 people. Here we are able to assemble and/ or produce TBMs of up to 9 meters in diameter, as well as cutting tools, project-specific jobsite equipment and handle spare and wear parts.

Beside our business activities in the region, we underline our commitment to India in taking part at the collaborative celebration Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities in Chennai as a City Sponsor. On an area of 50sqm Herrenknecht delivers an insight of the company and its projects all around the world. Explore the world of mechanized tunnelling in the Herrenknecht Pavilion. See sustainable solutions for the construction of powerful urban infrastructures in Traffic and Utility Tunnelling for the megacities of India and worldwide. Beside Metro references in New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai we are showing a drinking water supply project in Mumbai and a crossing for the East-West-Gas Pipeline to support India’s booming economy with natural gas. The model in our pavilion gives an idea of an underground infrastructure solution in inner-cities. Animations of tunnel boring machines explain their working principles and show reference of tunnels built in Italy and in Shanghai. On the hour we give visitors the chance of getting a guided tour.
